Today witnesses joined an effort to cross two asylum seeking families with young children on the bridge between Matamoros, Mexico, and Brownsville, Tx. According to lawyers we spoke to, the families have a special status because the babies were born in Mexico. That should exempt them from being forced to remain in Mexico, according to the rules of the policy known as MPP.
Witnesses stood on the bridge with these families and their attorneys and asked the US border guards to follow their own policy.
Their answer was to tell the families there is no room.
Witness at the Border intends to conduct its vigil until all the asylum seekers forced to wait in some of the most dangerous places on earth are allowed to cross out of that danger, and are welcomed to safety in the US.
