Some of us were talking this morning about how it is hard for people to get their minds around the enormity of the day-after-day deportation of humans from airports and across borders, taking place around us and being done in our name.

From time to time, we know something specific about one or more of the people who are about to be chained and marched up the steps into a jet. Sometimes people are making a last-minute case to keep someone from being thrown out of our country. We want people, sometimes people with power, to jump in and stop the deportation at the last minute.

So, we make a fuss.

We tweet, post on social media, show pictures of what it is like to stand at the fence of an airport and watch as the chains are arranged and people are patted down and asked to open their mouths for inspection, usually in hours before the sun rises.

But we risk distorting the truth. The truth is worse.

Because IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY. And we record every flight.
