I remember it like it was yesterday. Witnesses from all over joined Joshua Rubin, Karla Rader Barber, Julie Swift, Camilo Antonio Perez Bustillo, Lee Goodman, and Thomas Cartwright in #Brownsville, TX, to hold a vigil to #EndMPP and #RestoreAsylum. That's where I met these good people and more: Grannies Respond/Abuelas Responden, Families Belong Together, Bay Area Border Relief, RAICES, Austin Border Relief Volunteers, Hope Border Institute, Border Network for Human Rights, Texas Civil Rights Project, Good Neighbor Settlement House, Inc., and literally uncountable others.
Sadly, we were driven away by the next abomination to hit the border: Title 42, the most impenetrable border wall of them all.
Candidate Joe Biden said he'd end the program. And he did -- just long enough for about 1/3 of those placed under MPP to be processed and crossed into the US to wait out the adjudication of their asylum claims with their loved ones. Mexico had the infrastructure of the Campamento Inmigrante Matamoros bulldozed before the week was out, even though roughly 60 people still waited to be crossed.
Just like that, crews erased the humanitarian works of Jodi Goodwin, Team Brownsville, Angry Tias and Abuelas of the RGV, Global Response Management, Resource Center Matamoros, Charlene D'Cruz and Lawyers for Good Government, Norma Seni Pimentel and Catholic Charities USA, Solidarity Engineering, The Sidewalk School for Children Asylum Seekers, Cindy Andrade Johnson, Abraham Barberi, Glady Edith Cañas Aguilar, Larry Cox, Estuardo Cifuentes and Rainbow Bridge Asylum Seekers and literally uncountable others.
Now MPP -- one of the most inhumane border policies in US history -- is back. Not only that, it has been expanded by the very president who promised a more humane border. What's more, he didn't need to do that.
Join us to discuss the return of the Migrant "Protection" Protocols, which protect no one at all and aren't much of a protocol, with Charlene D'Cruz, Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council, and Yael Schacher of Refugees International.
