The health of immigrant women in detention suffers. In the case of the women forced to have hysterectomies at the Irwin Detention Facility in Georgia the threat to their reproductive health came from the doctor assigned to care for them. Pregnant women are systematically denied or provided poor pre-natal care. We know that many immigrant women are raped while in detention. These acts of violence, family separation, and family detention create long lasting mental health issues for many who are subjected to the systematic abuses of the U.S. immigration detention system.

This report outlines some of the abuses that immigrant people of color—particularly Black, Latinx, and Muslim women—experience in detention and the impact on their health.
