We have a tendency to apologize for migration. We try to point out that there is no great surge of humanity coming to the southern border. But why do we worry this point like a guilty dog with a bone?

There is no denying that there are a lot of desperate, often hungry, people trying to get into the United States. Why wouldn’t they? We are continuing a long-standing reaction to political persecution and brutal exploitation. And—this is important—we are only at the beginning of the most profound displacement in the history of humanity.

Yes, hungry and desperate people are coming north because they want to survive. Many many more will come, and they will keep coming. One way or another, the unfair hoarding of the world’s resources will need to be mitigated. Until it is, we should expect to witness widespread famine. Death.

We can’t argue that what is happening is no big deal. That a small adjustment in our attitude toward sharing is all it takes.

It’s a big deal. The biggest. There has never been another crisis like it. It will take some seismic shifts to avert disaster.

What happens is up to us. No apologies.
